Stop ! Do not add Trail Re-routes
Sep 29, 2008
We are seeing more re-routes around trail features on P2. Marker G had an entire new 100 foot trail circumventing the small log over after the big skinny stunt. We have also seen removal of very small (3-4in\") logs that have been on the trails for years.
Instead of reducing trail challenges, try increasing your rider skills.
If you stay with the sport long enough, you will come to regret how easy and boring the trail has become because the challenges have been removed. Just walk something if it is too hard, practice easier challenges until you are ready for more difficulty.
Adding re-routes is a bad idea!
1) It increases our impact on the forest.
2) Leads to more erosion.
3) Creates more work for volunteers
4) Dumbs down the trail, leading to mixing rider skill levels which leads to aggravation for low and highly skilled riders. Conflicts over speed, right of way, passing.
Ride P1 and practice skills until you are ready but please do not make trail changes. Please do get involved with COMBO and learn more about mountain biking, trail building and working with Park Land Management.
Storm Damage Cleared
Sep 20, 2008
A big thanks to the many volunteers that came out to Phase 1 and Phase 2 to clean up the storm damage. Miles of trail were raked clear. Huge trees have been removed that were blocking the trail. Evac routes are open again.
Expect to see some trail changes that re-route around new obstacles or new technical trail features have been added. P2 still has one large tree across the trail between J & K. This log will be a new log triangle feature that should be done by Sunday September 21st.
Skills Park
Aug 3, 2008
The teeter totter at the Skills Park has finally been replaced. The new teeter is great and wants to be ridden. Thanks to cakerider (Mitch) for building the new teeter.
Riding Trails Backwards
Jun 25, 2008
Hi Everyone,
I heard last evening of a pair of riders getting scolding for riding P2 the "wrong way" or this is a "one direction trail". Sorry to say, that is just flat out untrue.
Riding P2 clockwise is terrific and changes the whole experience of riding P2, IMHO. I would suggest doing it during less busy hours, when counter-clockwise traffic is lower.
One "rule" that needs observed not just at Alum but anywhere you ride is the "uphill moving” rider has right of way. If the extent of your riding is mostly Ohio or only Alum then this universal rule may not be known to you. Of course if you're on a designated Downhill course this rule would not apply.
Use your ears to hear oncoming traffic (in other words if you wear an IPod, you might want to re-think that idea), call out around blind corners. Look well ahead when riding, you can usually see oncoming traffic if you look across to another section of trail.
Oh and be polite, we don’t need any trail rage incidents out there!
