Alum Creek State Park is home to 3 trails for COMBO. There is a 1.7 mile Beginner Loop, a 6 mile intermediate loop (Phase 1 or P1) and a 6 mile advanced loop (Phase 2 or P2). There is also a small Skills Park.
Beginner Loop
The Beginner Loop is just that, a short trail for beginners. The trail is not technical and has no elevation change. It is a good trail for someone's first ride and will give you a good warm up for what riding dirt trails is like. It is also great for kids. The trail is a lollipop design, which means that you ride in on one trail and then there is a loop and you ride back on the same single track the you came in. At the loop the trail can be ridden either way but most traffic rides clockwise (a left at the loop).
Phase 1 - Intermediate Trail
P1 is for intermediate and novice riders. There isn't much elevation change on the trail but it is very rooty in many sections. There are a few log traingles and log overs but several have bypasses. There are many bridges on the trail but they are not high off the ground (usually about 3 feet or so but some are higher). There is also a large boardwalk after the creek crossing that is about 8" off the ground. P1 does not drain well and remains too wet to ride several days after a rain. Please be sure to check the trail conditions on the front page before riding P1. The trail can be riden either clockwise or counterclockwise but 95% of the traffic is counterclockwise. If you ride clockwise please pay attention to riders coming the other way. It is usually a good idea to ride the trail clockwise during off-peak usage times.
Phase 2 - Advanced Trail
P2 is for advanced riders. The trail is off camber in many sections, it has a bit more elevation change and several bridges are very narrow (4"-10"). The bridges on P2 are higher off the ground than P1 (up to 8'-10'). As with P1 there are several log triangles and log overs but typically there is no bypass (but don't hesitate to walk over anything you are not comfortable riding). Because P2 has more elevation change that P1 it does drain a bit better after rain but the trail still may not be rideable after it has rained so please be sure to check the trail conditions on the front page before riding. The trail can be riden either clockwise or counterclockwise but 95% of the traffic is counterclockwise. If you ride clockwise please pay attention to riders coming the other way. It is usually a good idea to ride the trail clockwise during off-peak usage times.
Directions
Phase 1, the Beginner Loop and the Skills Park all share the same parking lot on Lewis Center Road. From the north you can take Route 36/37 to Africa Road and go south to Lewis Center Road. Then go left and the parking lot will be on your left (before you cross over I71). From the south you can take Polaris Parkway to Worthington Road (north) to Africa Road (left) to Lewis Center Road (right). The Beginner Loop and Skills Park are across the road from the parking lot.
To get to Phase 2 from the north you can take Route 36/37 to Africa Road. The parking lot is on your right just after the parking lot for the boat ramp (before Cheshire Road). From the south you can take Polaris Parkway to Worthington Road (north) to Africa Road (left). The parking lot will be the first lot on your left after you pass the Cheshire Road intersection (4 way stop). The P2 trailhead is across Africa Road (you will see the dirt trail run up the hill just north of the parking lot entrance).
