Short-track Racing at Chestnut Ridge!

Have you ever thought about trying a race but didn't know how to get started?  Well, COMBO has partnered with Cap City Collective to host the finale of the Cap City Short Track Mountain Bike Series at Chestnut Ridge on Wednesday, August 17th starting at 6pm!  Although not part of the actual series, this unique format gives you the perfect opportunity to rip some quick laps and experience the thrill of racing without going out for a full-day slog.  In addition, 100% of the proceeds will go towards COMBO's ongoing efforts to build & maintain your favorite trails!

To explain more about the short track format, I asked local pro racer Jen Malik to tell me a little bit more about this type of racing and why she loves it.  Here's what she had to say...

Short Track courses are staked 'morning of' so the course is always different!

"For the past two years, I have been looking forward to the Cap City Short Track Mountain Bike (STXC) Series and once again the first race was as fantastic and fun as I remembered from the previous year (of course with the suffering of racing thrown in). STXC is a weird yet amazing hybrid between cyclocross and mountain biking in which the elements of each discipline are combined to creat a spectator friendly mini mountain bike race.  Like cyclocross, the course varies from race to race having been staked and taped off earlier that day and includes various mountain bike features such as grueling climbs, some single track, and whatever natural obstacles can be found at the race venue (roots, rocks, drops, etc).

Each category competes for a specified period of time, with the number of laps determined after the first minutes of the race (like a criterium or cyclocross race). Since laps are typically under a mile long it is the perfect set up for people to come watch and cheer as you battle the elements and are testing your limits - I personally love to come up with the loudest and most creative cheers to keep people going!

The Cap City Short Track Series was one of my first race series that I had ever done and I am pretty sure the first race I did was the 3rd time on my mountain bike or something ridiculous like that.  If you are interested in seeing what mountain biking is about but aren't quite ready to commit to a full day on the trails, short track is the perfect starting point.  The races can be as difficult or easy as you would like and since you do multiple laps it gives plenty of time to practice turning, accelerating out of corners, and thwarting technical features - also if you are absolutely toasted after a few laps you are only 0.5 miles from your car at most.  This year there is no bike restriction so if you don't have a mountain bike but want to come check out what STXC is about you are welcome to bring and ride whatever you have!!"

With laps under a mile in length, the racing is fast & furious and LOTS of fun!

From our partners at Cap City Collective... "Cap City Collective and COMBO look at this event as the start of a partnership that will help usher in a new era of mountain biking in central Ohio and will lead to the growth of off-road riding, greater access to mountain biking trails, other off-road riding opportunities and the foundation for youth mountain biking team in central Ohio. Please join us for an evening of fun and racing on a very spectator friendly course as we look toward a bright future for mountain biking in central Ohio."
